Diet Hacks: 4 Actions You Can Take NOW To Improve The Way You Eat (or Not Eat)

You can't juice a banana.

You can't juice a banana.

Without a doubt, every party, family gathering, shin-dig, barbecue or picnic that I go to, I get asked, at least once…

“How do I lose this?”

“This”, of course, refers to a trouble spot on someone’s body that seems to be accumulating excessive amounts of fat.

It’s most often the mid-section, but there are times when people will show me the jiggle under their arms or excess fat between their butt and their thighs (women call these saddlebags, I think) or, if they’re feeling extra desperate, they’ll just shove their butt in my face while I’m trying to finish my salad.

When they get my response, they always look somewhat disappointed. For some reason, they think I’m going to give them some miracle exercise or tell them about some underground Chinese herb that is the cure-all for their ailments.

Sorry to say, but the best way to clear up that tire around your waist that is causing you to buy bigger and bigger pants every year, is to CLEAN UP YOUR DIET.

I can sense the disappointment already.

It is true, though. Diet accounts for the majority of your results. Exercise and lifestyle obviously will contribute to you living a lean and healthy life, but rest assured, as the saying in the fitness industry goes…

You can’t out-train a crappy diet.

In saying that, here are 4 things that you can do NOW to get on the right track. Mind you, these aren’t quick-fixes and they won’t be the solution to your weight loss problems, but they will help. And if you’re having trouble with losing weight because you can’t get your diet under control, then this is where you should start….

1. Drink more water.
Get rid of the empty calorie containing drinks - soda, coffee drinks like those frappe-sugar-cinos, even juices (yes, juices…just eat the real fruit). The overwhelming majority of us are dehydrated and don’t even know it. Just make a conscious effort to drink more water and you’ll feel more energetic, you’ll think clearer and chances are, what you mistaken to be hunger will really be thirst, resulting in you eating less.

2. Eat A Salad Everyday.
This was a tip from my buddy, Yuri Elkaim, a natural food expert, that I incorporated into my lifestyle after he told me about it our interview HERE. It’s made a world of difference in how I feel, how I look (I’ve dropped 2% bodyfat since) and how I live (I have more energy and less feelings of lethargy). I used to hate salads, but since I’ve been buying a various different greens (from spinach, to arugula, to kale and even dandelion) I enjoy the varying tastes even more. Here’s one of my favorite salads for you to try…

Chris’ Cayenne Candied Pecan California Salad

1 bunch Arugula or Baby Spinach
8 Strawberries (sliced)
2 Tbsp Goat Cheese
1 handful pecans
1 tsp Maple Syrup
1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
1 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 Tbsp Vinegar
Salt & Pepper to taste

Put the arugula in a bowl. Mix the Olive Oil, Vinegar, salt & pepper in a separate bowl and toss with the arugula.
In a separate bowl add the pecans, maple syrup and sprinkle the cayenne. Toss until all the pecans are covered with the cayenne/maple mixture.
Top the arugula with strawberries, crumbled goat cheese and “Cayenne Candied Pecans” and serve.

The sweetness of the maple goes perfect with the sourness of the goat cheese and the kick of the cayenne. This is one unbelievable salad…I promise.

Fish Oil

Fish Oil

3. Take Fish Oil.
I’m not big on supplements. I’ve cut out protein shakes, meal replacements, muscle builders and fat burners all from my diet over the past 3 or 4 years because if humans could thrive without these things for millions of years, then why bother with them now?

Fish oil, however, is one supplement that I do take. Here are some reasons why…
-it supports testosterone levels and contributes to optimal muscle development (really big for guys today who seem to have declining levels of T and HGH)
-it reduces inflammation in your muscles and joints and speeds recovery time
-decrease triglyceride levels and reduce the risk of heart disease
-increase fat burning and also make it more difficult for your body to store fat

4. Short-term Intermittent Fasting
I’ve been doing IFs once or twice per week for the past 2 years now. Why fasting? Here’s the video (done by my good friend, Brad Pilon) that got me hooked…

Basically, when your body produces insulin, you are in storage mode. When your body produces growth hormone, you’re in fat burning mode. The only way to produce growth hormone is when you sleep, engage in intense exercise and during periods of fasting.

Kettlebell Training

Kettlebell Training

I try to sleep 8 hours per night.

Sleep? - CHECK.

I train with KBs, run hills & play pick-up basketball.

Intense Exercise? CHECK.

The only thing left in the trifecta was to practice IF - CHECK!!!

So What Now?

Like I’m slowly starting to realize, just take one of these steps and implement it today. Then take another and do it tomorrow. Make little changes here and there and before you know it, you’ll be forming healthier habits on your way to losing weight and living a better life.

I am currently half way through a mild de-tox just to get me body back on track, the biggest thing I have realized in 4 days is I feel great!!! There is something very natural to a de-tox of cutting out sugar, dairy and severly limiting meat from my “western” diet. Restaurants like Fresh have been able to inspire great food ideas and help me through the lazy meals where I just don’t want to cook and then it hit me…….

Why is Mcdonalds ok when I am not on a de-tox when I can drive past it now because it is not on the list? It’s not and maybe a mild de-tox should not be a de-tox at all but a way to live and keep all the junk out in the first place. Read the 7 essential rules to optimum health and weight loss post if you haven’t yet!!

Right on the money CL!!!!!

Hey Spencer,

It sounds like you just had a revelation! Great job, bro. Keep up the good work.

Remember, when you’re finished your detox, it doesn’t mean that it’s back to eating unconsciously again.

Good luck and I’m here to help you in any way I can!

Chris,

You are doing a great job and yes, we should eat cleaner and most of the basic rules for operating the human body include a clean diet, exercise and plenty of rest.

In our fast-paced western civilization, normal lifestyles don’t include much of any of this. Is it any wonder we are heavier than ever?

One suppliment I would/do include that you have not mentioned that is essential to every body function is enzymes. There are digestive enzymes available out there that replace the deficiencies in our food. Face it, with mass production, the natural enzymes in fresh foods are processed out and if they come from another country, the fruits and vegetables are irradiated, killing the natural enzymes in them that help digest them.

You want to talk about feeling better, having more energy and vitality, thinking more clearly and reducing your bio-age versus your chronological age, add enzymes to your diet and see what happens! I started this 4 years ago and my bio-age dropped from 60 to 22! My chronological age is 48. Of course, doing the other things you talk about is part of the change, too! Not only am I healthier, I haven’t been sick in that same amount of time!

Keep up the great work!

Great comment, JD (and thanks for the kind words)!

I will definitely look more into enzymes and try to learn as much about them as I can.

thanks for the insight!

Our body synthesizes enzymes that hydrolyze food molecules, so you’re wrong. Food does contain enzymes that break/ripen the food, such as fruits. Thus, food spoilage is common.

No comment . . . but a question. Is there any thing a vegetarian can take in place of fish oil?

Comment by Chris

Hi Miles

Here’s some info that I found about Vegan Fish Oil Alternatives from this site…

http://hubpages.com/hub/Vegetarian_Alternatives_to_Fish_Oil

Algae combined with nut / seed oil
- Consuming algae such as spirulina can assist the body in properly converting omega 3 fats from the oils of nuts and seeds. This is one of the most common vegetarian replacements for fish oil. Spirualina as the algae and flax oil is the best combination although others are suitable as well.

Black Currant Oil
- Some nutritional sales spots say that the Omega-3 fatty acids ALA and Stearidonic Acid which are present in black currant oil can improve the cardiovascular system and help maintain the hormones that can lead to some types of depression so this may be a good vegetarian replacement for fish oil. However, the FDA hasn’t confirmed this.

Flax seed oil
- This falls into the category above for seed oil combined with algae but it’s good enough as a replacement to be worth mentioning on its own. Flax seed oil is also known to have other health benefits so you should learn more about this alternative.

Vegetarian Fish Oil Replacement Supplements
- Plenty of people get their fish oil simply by going to their nutritional store or drug store and picking up the tablets of it. As a vegetarian, you can do the same things. There are vegetarian alternatives to fish oil capsules, such as Seven Seas Vegetarian Omega-3. These may not be as easy to find as fish oil capsules but if you seek, they are there.

Hope that helps,
Chris

Fish oil? Where to buy? Specific brand(s)?

Thanks

Hey Glen

I use Metagenics EPA-DHA Extra Strength. It’s a pharmaceutical grade fish oil that I get from my chiropractor’s office.

A really good brand is Udo’s Essential Oil that you can get at almost any health food store. That’s the brand that I would use if Metagenics wasn’t reasonably available to me.

Great article Chris. Agree with all 4 points, especially the intermittent fasting. I’ve been practicing it once or twice a week and it’s sure changed my relationship with food. I also try to get at least 2 mega salads in daily packed with as many veggies available in the fridge.

Hi,this is my very 1st visit to your site, and I gotta say:
I LOoOoOOoOOveeeeee it!
Seriously this post is a great writing with applicative and points r easy to try!
You’re so right bout IF.I’m a muslim, and we have a month of fasting in each year as ritual.unless u do it wrong,u’ll come as a great controlable person after a month of consistent&healty fasting.like a master yoga or a big guru:its so great when u find yourself easy to control by yourself.
If u wanna loose weight,I recomend to mix your fasting with ‘walk everywhere’ lifestyle.u’ll get a re-new fit and healty body! n_n

Reading the information on intermittant fasting, there is discussion about how it helps people lose weight. However, if one just has a little body fat to lose and doesn’t need to necessarily lose weight, I’m guessing the intermittant fasting wouldn’t have any benefits.

Hi Mary

Great question … I disagree that “IF” wouldn’t have any benefits to someone who only has a little fat to lose. I think if you’re practicing IF and you’re trying to lose the last little bit, then responsible eating would have to be your primary concern.

So, in saying that, you’d really need to be conscious that you’re consuming whole, natural, REAL food and limiting (or eliminating) your sugar, processed food and starchy carbohydrate intake.

Losing that last little bit of fat is still a Calories In vs. Calories Out equation, but if you’re practicing IF and focusing on the best quality food in addition to training with weights, then I’m POSITIVE the last little bit of fat will come off.

Aside from the fat loss benefits, you can’t deny the hormonal benefits of IF particularly that of Human Growth Hormone. That’s one of the main reasons why I practice Intermittent Fasting.

Since I need to be careful about losing too much more weight or any weight for that matter, when you practice “IF”, would the time that you do spend eating after fasting be spent eating as many calories as you would normally if you were not fasting, or is that pretty much impossible since you have a small window to eat. Am I making sense? Thanks so much!!!
